I cannot believe that July is almost over. A couple of more days and all the fall clothes will be in the stores (or maybe they are already)
Friday we made a drive up to Banff for a memorial service for Auntie Ming. What a great lady she was. She is actually a great Aunt to Bill. The service was beautiful and it was nice to see all of her kids and grandkids. I hope we can continue to have family get togethers. All of the older generation of people of leaving us and it is getting more difficult to keep up some of the Chinese traditions.
Speaking of getting older, I was talking to mom on the phone today. She was trying to describe a person that had visited the manor. There is a new lady in the manor and it turns out her son went to school with Bill and I. I mentioned this to mom and she has been trying to see if the son has visited the new lady. Last weekend, the new lady had a male visitor who had two small children with him. I told mom that was probably not Bill's friend as he was our age. So today when I was talking to mom, she mentioned that the lady had another male visitor and this time it might have been our highschool friend. He was elderly with gray hair! I reminded mom that he would be our age and she said she knew that. We jokingly discussed the difference between old and elderly and Mom said there was no difference. She reminded me that I am getting up there........ So I guess I am now officially elderly! That would explain all of the aches and pains!!!! Boy, talk about feeling like I need a cane or something!
Today I managed to get a start on my spring cleaning..... or maybe early on my fall cleaning. I got started on the much needed inside window washing. There has been one window that has been bothering me for a while. I thought it was dirty on the outside, but after I had the windows washed on the outside, it was still dirty. So it must be dirty on the inside. Turns out there is actually water in between the two window panes. Great one more thing that needs fixing. So the window is third on our list - behind the one garage door, and the router for the computer. Maybe our house is now considered elderly too.!!!!
I'm hoping tomorrow to get out in the yard and pull some of those weeds; finish up the laundry; get the chocolate chip cookies baked (the dough is in the fridge - as least Ashley isn't home to snack on that) and work on my knitting - yup started knitting a few things again.
Better get to bed so I have the energy tomorrow to do all my chores.

Day 10 of July
Ok, the son has been home for over two days, and I learned a few more things.
1) He had his "fortune read" by a monk at a temple -and I guess it was eerily right on track
2) he stubbed his toe at the same said tremble, and it had since become infected
3) he also stepped on some sharp coral and sliced the bottom of his foot open.
4) he was one of the youngest participants (average age was 22)
5) only Patrick and one other person were first year students
6) in this group of volunteers ther were only 3 Canadians and the other two were from edmonton, but they were not in Patrick's group.
7) I have seen a picture of one of the Thailand soap stars and there is a striking resemblance.
8) Patrick has learned and enjoys cooking Thai food. Just had a delicious supper cooked by him.
9) jet lag seems to kick in around the second and third day.
10) it only takes two or three days for the son to completely mess his room up once more.......
Bill and I trekked down to salsa fest today, with miss maya. We once again parked up on crescent heights hill with the bat mobile. Maya loves the wind blowing through her ears. To me the venue seemed much bigger this year, but Bill disagreed with me, so my memory must be mistaken.
It was a beautiful day for a festival. So beautiful, that the streets were wall to wall with people, little people, strollers, bikes, balloons, and the odd policeman. Unfortunately most of the line ups for the salsa testing were extremely long, so Bill and his bag of nachos didn't get to taste everything. We were there by noon ( it started at eleven) but even when we left around two, the crowds were still pretty thick. There were a few bottle necks, but they usually occurred when there was an alcohol serving place. ( go figure). Maya did so well. It proves that she a territorial dog. Only once did she growl, and that was when we were standing still and a teenager bumped into us.(she was loud and giggling) otherwise, there was no barking, growling or anything. When it got crowded, I would pick her up and put her in her carrying pouch. Bill was right about one thing, Maya is a great chick magnet. No wonder he takes her with him to all the festivals.
Anyway, because the son made a delicious meal, I volunteered to clean up his mess, and he made a big one.
Monday is just around the corner, enjoy it.

Day 9 of July
Well he's home. The son arrived back in Calgary around 8;45 pm. I can't believe he arrived with the same amount of luggage that he left with - a small suitcase, a back pack, and a sling bag. It's been three hours since he arrived and this is what I have learned so far about the trip.
1) He wants to go back in a few years.
2) All the young girls that he encountered think he looks just like a soap star in Thailand
3) He is quite the barterer (sp) at the markets
4) Smoking cigars is not like smoking cigarettes (his words not mine)
5) His new favorite drink is the Samsung bucket. Thailand whiskey, coke, red bull - combined in a bucket and straws for everyone.
6) He can count to 1,000 is Thai
7) Wet and dirty clothes in a suitecase for over 24 hours emitts an awful smell
8) Going one month without shaving was not an option - even gave himself a haircut
9) No matter how jet lagged you are, one can always go to an opening night movie of Dark Knight at 3:00 am.
10) One can visit Thailand for an entire month and not miss his cell phone, but as soon as he steps into his home domain, the phone is on and busy as ever.
So yes I got a few details. The soap star story was the funniest. Even when he got to the resort part of his trip, the hotel staff was asking to have their picture taken with him. As soon as he shows me the soap star he's referring to, I'll post the resemblance. So in addition to having his picture taken with all these young girls, there were also a lot of "ladyboys" who wanted their picture taken. (transvestites).
I should have taken a picture when he walked off the plane with his three little bags, his muscle shirt and his fishing pants and flip flops. He really did look like a hippy on the go.
I can't wait until he has distributed all the "yucky" cigars he brought back for his friends. They don't even have the nice cigar smell to them.
I know someone who is going to be doing laundry first thing tomorrow (and it won't be me) Well maybe not first thing, because I'm thinking if he goes to a 3:00 am movie with his friends, he's going to be one tired puppy when he gets home. Good thing I didn't take time off work, because Patrick is going to be asleep anyways.
I did get a chance to look at a few pictures. Over 1600 pictures and I don't think I have made it half way through. Good thing the pictures got saved when the camera didn't. It got wet somehow. Guess he should have bartered for a new one while he was shopping.
The group Patrick was in consisted of three guys and 7 girls I think. So the three guys stayed with one host family - who just happened to be the mayor/leader of the village. Smart thinking on the ISV team for that one. Curfew in the village was 8:00 pm. Maybe we need to look at some of those laws over here!!!!!! Patrick did keep a journal so I'm anxious to hear more of the stories.
The scariest story from his trip was the flight home. I guess at the end of the flight to LA from Bangkok, the plane started shaking from turbulence and all Patrick could think of was LOST, the TV show. Great - hopefully that thought leaves my memory the next time I have to fly to LA, like in September.

Day 8 of July
What a busy day. What better way to end it than a good concert. And it was a good concert - not a great concert, but a good concert. First of all, any artist who has to follow a Garth Brooks concert within in a 1 month period, is going to have a lot to live up to. Having said that, Mr. Diamond, I think did his best.
I thought we actually had tickets in one of the boxes, but it turns out we were just in the president seats section. They were comfy seats, but quite far from the stage. That wasn't a big disappointment as there were two giant screens up, plus Neil had his microphone turned up quite loud; just in the case the audience went wild and we wouldn't be able to hear him - that didn't happen. I did learn a few things at the concert. Neil just turned 71 in January (actually I googled that when I got home) He just got married to Katie (apparently his third wife and a lot younger than him;again from google) I didn't know "I'm a believer was a Neil Diamond song; the more familar version is of course from the Shrek movie. I realize Mr. Diamond is 71, and no doubt his voice is going to be different from years ago, but I was disappointed in how much he talked in his songs. I remember his songs from when I was in elementary school. And just to make sure I wasn't missing something, I went back and listened to his earlier recordings. Yes he talked in some songs, but he sang much more. There were also a couple of times in his concert that I was a little confused about. I didn't know if he was being serious or trying to be funny. There was one song where he got down; first on one knee and then laying down to serenade a lady in the audience. Another time was when he sang Sweet Caroline. We were so excited with he song and of course everyone cheered and stomped at the end. Who knew he would sing the last chorus of the song again; and again; and again. The last time he sang it, people were actually laughing - I don't think it was supposed to be funny. Then he just finished telling us about his new wife and dedicated a song to her. The next song, he did a duet with one of his back-up singers (who had a great voice) and lets just say, the bad actiing added with the pretend make out session seemed wrong.
On a positive note, the dome was packed (I actually felt young). The brass section was awesome and seemed to be having the most fun. The camera never actually left Neil's face, so it was difficult to see the musicians from where we were sitting. And we had great company. Thanks to Tammy and Jamie for inviting us. I'm curious to see the critics reviews tomorrow to see if we were at the same concert.
Got a few more things to get done tonight because the SON is coming home tomorrow. Can't wait to hear all the stories.
Good night Sweet Caroline and Cracklin' Rosie

Day 7 of July
It's official, Stampede 2012 is over. Except for the trek to the grounds to see Garth, I didn't even venture down. I my mind, this now means that summer is 1/2 over. I know it's only he 16th, but once Stampede is over, the city calms down, and somehow the summer days drift away. It's funny, when you are a kid, summer seems to last forever.
Had a relatively quiet weekend. Spent Saturday night babysitting my little ones.
Sunday, Ashley and Ethan ran to Superstore for me to pick up some salmon to take to Robin's. I couldn't believe my eyes; when they got home, Ethan actually put the groceries away. I was impressed on one hand, but concerned on the other - he must spend so much time at our place, he actually knows where everything goes!!!!!
Ashley, Ethan and myself headed over to Robin's for a family get together. Did I mention how big Miss Caylee is getting. My gosh before long, she is going to be starting school. She had a good evening considering all the attention was on her. She is definetly going to be a leader, not a follower; and Alisa as frustrating as that is at this age, it will benefit her when she's in school.
Came home and did some paper work to get ready for my stores in the morning. Then Monday morning came; I realized I'm in need of more rest so will start my stores tomorrow. That's why I love this card job. Very flexible.
So one child left this morning; (working at a BC horse show) and the other child will be home Thursday. I can't believe it has already been a month since the son left. I am so excited to hear about his adventure and to see how he looks. He wasn't going to shave the entire time he was gone, so it should be interesting.
Anyway, treadmill is done, laundry is started, I'm sure it's time for a much needed shower.

Day 6 of July
wow, WOW and WOW! One of the most charismatic entertainers on this planet. Garth Brooks concert was last night. Now don't get me wrong, the Las Vegas Garth concert was amazing, and it cannot be duplicated, but to see and hear Mr. Brooks sing his own songs and how amazing his voice and showmanship is, just gives me goosebumps. Like he says, each of his songs is like one of his babies and you know he cherishes them. How can you not love a guy, who gives up his career to be there for his kids (being that he financially can); still refers to his wife as Miss Yearwood and says Thank you to everyone all the time; from the audience, to his band, to the side guy who keeps handing him his guitars. I am still smiling (even with my eyes closed and nodding off)
So yes we hit the Stampede grounds yesterday. Technically I only really wandered around the BMO center to see of the "wares" and then into the Corral to see all the art work and crafts. My only venture onto the grounds was after Bill arrived and he wanted his usual Stampede corn dog. I have never seen the appeal of the "dog" like that, but after watching the guy holding about 10 uncooked and uncoated dogs in his bare hands (no gloves) and then dipping them, I'm pretty sure I will go to my grave having never tasted one. It's not even on my bucket list. Although I did think of another think I should have on my bucket list. "Thank god, for Unanswered Prayers" (Garth song) I would like to see a concert (preferrably one I want to see) from the front row. I swear I cannot figure out how people get front row seats. And I want to feel sorry for people who paid anywhere over 800.00 for their tickets last night. Because for $1000.00 you could fly to Vegas, stay at a cheap hotel and see Garth at the Wynn Hotel.
Other than the corn dog maker, the only other distasteful part of the Garth experiece was the C-train ride to the grounds. I do not miss the daily commute. Ethan gave me a ride to the Crowfoot station. I paid my $2.75 for a ticket and found a seat on the last car. Between the heat on the train (or lack of air conditioning); the loud voices of gossiping girls; and finally the crammed cars by the time we were leaving downtown, I was tempted to pop a couple of ativan to calm me down. I now remember why people try and sleep (or pretend to be sleeping) on the C-Train. When the train is packed and you are sitting on a side seat, where are you supposed to look. Straight ahead at the urban cowboy, who thinks tight jeans are sexy???? I'll admit, I am spoiled for being able to work at a job that doesn't require me to be downtown or travel during rush hour. I guess I am just "Much too Young to feel This Damn Old" (garth song)
An update on the son. He sent another Email that he was still safe, but was taking some money out of his bank account. Again he didn't use our code word, so hopefully it wasn't some thief stealing his identity. I can't believe that he'll be home next Thursday. What is the rule about how long I have to let him chill out before I bombard him with all my questions? Oh what the heck, I'll end up breaking those rules anyway.
And before he gets home, Ashley is leaving for B.C. to groom for a horseshow. I think she's gone for at least two weeks. Maybe we just need to get a revolving door put in.
Well I better get my act together and get ready for work. I just feel "Shameless" (garth song)
Enjoy your Fridy the 13th

Day 5 of July
I've got friends in low places........no this wasn't a dig at my BFF's. It means we are going to Garth Brooks. Short version of a long story. Bill came home last week from work and we were sitting around the dinner table; Bill, myself, Ashley and Ethan (Patrick's substitute) I think the daughter was talking about getting grandstand tickets and Bill made a comment that he turned down Garth Brooks tickets. I looked at him and told him to stop teasing, and of course he made that face that tells us he was teasing. I told him I knew he was teasing because there is no way he would have turned down Garth Brooks tickets when he knows what a big fan I am. I had told him when the tickets first went on sale, that I wouldn't pay for tickets to this show because we had just seen him in Vegas. And I didn't want him to call in any favors for tickets, again, because we had just seen him in Vegas. But if he were offered tickets, I would love to go and see Garth again. So yesterday, after work, guess who comes home with Garth Brooks tickets? And it looks like we have great seats. I am a very spoiled lady. I guess I will be going down to the grounds this year. Remind me to get my black cowboy boots back from Ashley.
While I was camping last weekend, I had received an email from Patrick. It basically went something like this: Still safe, and having the time of my life! He didn't sign it with our code name, so I'm hoping it was him (hahaha)
Also I mentioned that I sent a note to the owner/company of Lundbreck Falls to mention my dismay about not being able to put up tents in the regular camping area. Well yesterday I received a reply from the company:
hello. thank you for your email in reguards to tenting at lundbreck falls. you are correct, you can have a tent on any site as long as it is registered. i will be meeting with our manager to clear this issue up.this person is new and he is mistaken on this regulation
barry
In hind sight I'm wondering if I should have mentioned the inappropriate comments from the caretaker. My concern was that I had paid for the campsite with my cheque, which has my address and the last thing I want to do is tick off a creepy guy who knows where I live!!!!!
It was another beautiful day yesterday. It is hot, hot, hot, but I'm not complaining - I'll take this over the cold, winter days any time. And when I looked out into the back yard this morning, I have roses blooming all over the place, and my peonies are starting to bloom.
Unfortunately I still have the ant problem by our back window. Before I left for camping, I put out corn meal. I think it was my sister in law who mentioned if you put out oatmeal, the ants eat it, the oaatmeal expands in their tummy and they die. Humane - their ants, I'm not feeling too my anguish. Although the oatmeal didn't work, so yesterday when I stopped at Co op I picked up these little ant traps. It says they are supposed to be used inside, but I secured them in amongst those tiny workers. I sat and watched then ants last night, and there were so may and they were moving so fast, all I could think of was the movie Ants or Bug's Life. Really, it was a scene out of the movie.
Anyway the treadmill isn't going to start itself, so I better get a move on.
Enjoy your tuesday.
