Day 5 of June

Happy Father's Day to all those great Dads.  I'm feeling a little blue because I'm Dadless this year.  This will be the 29th year without my dad and the first year without my father-in-law.  But Bill is still a dad and should be celebrated by his kids.  Unfortunately Ashley is working today, but she did come into our room at 6:30 am to wish Bill a Happy Father's Day (with some reminder by mom)  She had bought his new work overhauls for when he changes the oil and tires.  The previous pair had holes in places I don't even want to mention.  But little did Ashley and I know that he already had a new pair stuffed away from a couple of years ago.  Why is he wearing the old tattered ones then.  Bill then got up and went to the gym (it is Father's Day after all) - but wait he goes every day.  When he gets home, we'll head to the cemetery to visit our Dad's graves and then for dim sum.  I'm sure Patrick will give him his slippers when we get home.
So last night was the Spinners.  It was a good show - not a great show, but somewhere between good and great.  I must admit, that all of the members looked very handsome in this white suits and silk white shirts and even the white shoes!!!!This is a current picutre of the group.  The first row are two of the original members.  Henry, the gentleman with the higher forehead on the bottom was my favorite.  He had a smile on his face the entire night and he could still sing.  The other original member, Bobbie tried hard, but his age was catching up with him and although his eyebrows said he was smiling all night, his mouth wasn't matching.  Plastic surgery maybe - who knows.  It took his a few songs to get his voice working well enough to keep up with the group.  But his sense of humor was in tact.  The back row, three newest memebers, Charlston, Jessie and Marvin brought lots of energy and sexappeal tot he show.  Jessie (middle) was the baritone, and it that didn't make you swoon..... and Mr. Marvin's voice matched that of Mr. Marvin Gaye - hands down - and he could hit those high notes.

This bottom picture is from an album of the original Spinners.  As you can see, Henry and Bobbie are sporting those mustaches and have a tiny bit more hair.  Turns out we were sitting a few seats away from
Grace and her sisters.  Luckily we found them before the show started and we were able to chit chat for a bit.  Here comes that small world part again.  I already knew this but had totally forgotten.  Dale (one of Grace's sisters) used to teach Trevor and Nathan in school.  I can't believe she still remembers them and she was asking about them.  If I had to rate the evening - I'd give it a 10 out of 10.  Thanks 103 FM.

On to our weed problem.  Here's what I found out from eHow.
The name "horsetail", often used for the entire group, arose because the branched species somewhat resemble a horse's tail. Similarly, the scientific name Equisetum derives from the Latin equus ("horse") + seta ("bristle")  Since prehistoric times, horsetail weed (Equisetaceae) has been a blight on the land. Horsetail is a perennial noxious weed with a deep spreading root stock. It is harmful to animals and difficult to eradicate. Horsetail weed, or mare's tail, is found in moisture-rich soils along lakes, rivers, ponds, roadsides and depressed areas in fields. Horsetail Weed forms dense patches of thick stems that persist throughout the winter. It spreads by underground root stock and by millions of spores that are released in the spring.  Other websites went on to say that this weed seems to have become more prominant since the eruption of Mount St Helens.  Although that happened in Washington (I believe), we had lots of the fall out of the ash here in Calgary.  As for getting rid of the weed, but basic concensus was, vinegar and soap.  That sounds easy enough - oh wait, I don't want to kill every other plant in my garden.  So I am going to practice killing the weeds on the swale side of the yard and the ones coming through the cobble stone.  It that works, I'll figure out something for the rest of the garden and lawn.  Now all I need is about 2 or 3 days straight without rain.  Should I check the forecast or the Spruce Meadows calendar.  Because we all know, when Spruce is flying high, the rain is coming from the sky!!!!!!
Better get my face washed and be ready when Bill gets home.
Enjoy your Sunday
Stacey
